Civil Rights Groups Vow to Fight Efforts to Eliminate EAC
the Clarion Ledger (5.25.11)
- Harper:
Election Panel should be Abolished
-
WASHINGTON — A House committee approved legislation Wednesday proposed by
Rep. Gregg Harper that would terminate the federal commission set up to
improve the nation's election systems.
"This is not just trying to pick on some group," said Harper, R-3rd Dist.
"It's just that if something doesn't work or it has outlived its purpose, we
should be able to bring it to an end."
The House Administration Committee voted to shut down the U.S. Election
Assistance Commission, an independent bipartisan group.
Lawmakers say the Republican-controlled House is likely to approve the
measure, but its prospects are less clear in the Senate, where Democrats are
the majority.
Civil rights groups vow to fight efforts to eliminate the EAC, saying the
commission helps to ensure election systems are fair and accessible.
"The right to vote is under attack," said Wade Henderson, president of the
Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. "In several states around
the country efforts are being made to impose new election standards.
Usually, it's been done in the guise of new voter ID bills. But other
changes are being pursued.
"This attack is part of an ideologically driven assault and intended to
effect the outcome of the 2012 election in key states around the country.
The effort to eliminate the EAC is part of the broader plan."
