Chapter Meeting Minutes 5/11/2011

Meeting was called to order at 12:15 PM by President Denise Colley.  This meeting started with lunch at 11:30, the President would like  comments from members on the new schedule.  In attendance were: Dan and Kathy Matsen, Viola and Alan Bentson, Terry Atwater, Diane Young, John and Gretchen Guydish, Gary and Isabel Ernest, Jackie Cabrera, Dee Delgado, Andrea and John Damitio, Ashlee Levcun, Zandra Brown, Howard Ferguson, Berl Colley, Rich and Anna Dirk, Greg Jack, Shannon Murphy and Denise Colley.  The president read the agenda. 

Minutes.  Minutes were sent out via the e-mail. 

Motion. Viola moved and Kathy seconded that the minutes be approved as submitted.  Andrea offered the corrections that John Damitio was in attendance at the last meeting and that he too volunteered to drive the Inner City Transit van to activities.  Zandra offered the correction that James Jablonski is her spouse and that his name is spelled Jablonski.  The minutes were approved as corrected.

Treasurer’s Report.  John’s report covers the period from April 16, 29 May 20.  In checking we had a beginning balance of $574.59, a deposit of $1000, disbursements of $740.85, leaving an ending balance of $833.74.  In savings we had a beginning balance of $6,377.56, a withdrawal of $1,000, interest earned of $.26, leaving an ending balance of $5,377.82.  Disbursements included $30 to WCB for memberships, $186.05 to Apollo’s for the pizza party, $524.80 to Classic Wines, the deposit came from a transfer from savings. 

Motion:  Viola moved and Kathy seconded that the Treasurer’s Report be approved as presented and the motion carried. 

Social.  Kathy and Dan thank the chapter for their prayers and other show of support to Dan during his recent hospitalization.  On May 20, six people: Dan, Kathy, Berl, Denise, John and Gretchen, met at Classic Wines to bottle our Braille Mountain wine.  They have 31 larger bottles of Peach Apricot wine for sale for $18 and 59 smaller bottles of Chocolate Black Cherry for $10 a bottle.  Kathy has wine in her car for sale to members after the meeting.  On June 18 we will hold our next chapter meeting and at 3 PM there will be a wine tasting at Classic Wines.  Admission is $5.45 per person, pay Kathy now or at the next meeting.  Social committee will be meeting on June 4.

Motion: Berl moved and Terry seconded that $250 be authorized for purchases for the summer picnic, and the motion carried.

Denise complimented Jackie and Dee on the chocolate pistachio cake they brought to honor recent CCCB birthdays. May birthdays include: Viola on May 26,and  Gary on May 12.

Andrea reported on upcoming Vision Loss Connection events.  Kevin Carey, Chairman Royal National Institute of Blind People will give a talk on the blind and arts and culture at Seattle Public Library on May 26.  On June 4, an audio-described version of Guys and Dolls will be presented at the Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle and on July 23, the same theater hosts the musical Aladdin.

Fundraising.  John Guydish, Berl, Gary and Rich met in early May at Happy Teriyaki downtown.  Candy sale will be the weekends of September 9 and September 23.  We will sell at two Ralph’s Thriftway stores and at the Fred Meyer in Lacey.  We have confirmation from Ralph’s and the application to Fred Meyer has been submitted.  Candy will be ordered 3 weeks before the sale.  Sale will be held from 10 to 6 PM on  Saturday and noon to 4 PM on Sunday.  John is de facto chairman of the candy sale committee as he is chairman of the Fundraising committee.  They allocated  $700 for the wine making project, which has come in under budget. Shirley is willing to continue selling t-shirts, but if we want to expand the selling, we may need to find some one else.  John  estimates we will be giving $700 to WCB for the Scholarship fund. 

Web page.  Rich is planning to add a page to our website about chapter members who operate businesses.  Get information to Rich about your business.  He has updated the calendar page and the constitution page, post calendar changes on the list serve so Rich can put them on the website.  Meeting minutes are now available on the website.  He plans to change from the FrontPage software we have been using to manage the site, to a Content Management system which will allow any member of the website or executive committees to update the site without having to know HTML codes or the format of the page.

WCB News.  Andrea reported she got a lot out of the WCB Leadership seminar.  Eleven people attended the seminar this year, she encourages CCCB members who have not attended to apply next year.  She also attended the May 1, WCB Board meeting.  The United Blind of Southwest Washington was admitted, their charter will be formally presented at the State convention in November. New WCB brochures are available, printed by Bernie Vinther, one of our WCB members in the Tri Cities. Bill Hoage was chosen from a group of nine applicants to be the WCB first timer to the ACB convention in Reno.  We have 26 requests for stipends, those receiving stipends need to attend the state caucus breakfast on Thursday morning.  WCB will have a suite at the hotel, Tim and Cindy Van Winkle will be living there, but Denise will be asking different members to act as host at the suite each evening.  Alcohol will be available only on Friday night.  Berl and Denise and Gloria and Tim attended the UBSW meeting last weekend.  They have 25 members so far, and they meet at WSSB on the second Saturday of the month. 

Next board meeting is July 31 at the downtown Holiday inn in Everett, no summer retreat this year.  Cost to attend the WCB convention in November have been set.  Registration including five meals is $75, banquet only is $35, registration with no meals is $15.  There will be a bus from Seattle to the Tri Cities.  Convention will be held November 3-5 at the Red Lion Inn in Pasco.  Our chapter did vote to send a first timer to WCB Convention, send a letter to Denise expressing your interest, the executive Committee will make the final choice. 

State News.  The legislature is still in session, scheduled to finish this special session by May 25.  The bill changing the definition of service animal did pass the legislature.  We are still hoping that it will be the Senate budget that gets passed through the Conference Committee. 

National news.  Berl reported that Darin Cheney, president of the new Idaho affiliate of ACB, will receive the Durward McDaniel Award.  The new affiliate will receive their charter at the ACB convention in Reno.  ACB has reached an agreement with the American Cancer Society, so they will be producing their materials in alternate formats. There is some progress in getting the bill to change the language in the Vehicle Donation Law changed in Congress.  Berl and Denise are attending the Florida Council of the Blind Convention, May 8-15.  Many of the activities at ACB convention will be centered around the 50th anniversary of ACB this year.  Dean Stenehjem, the superintendent of WSSB will speak on Tuesday during the convention, and on Wednesday Sue Ammeter will present a panel on Health Concerns.  Chris Cook, a former WCB scholarship winner will be on this panel.  The officers up for election this year Treasurer and three Board of Publication members.

Book club.  Alan reported the next meeting will be Saturday May 28 at Apollo’s Pizza at 2 PM.  Book under discussion is The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver.  June’s book is entitled Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, and the author is Susan Jane Gilman.

Other business.  Congratulations to the Matsens on the birth of their grandson Alexander on May 12.  Congratulation to Andrea whose daughter just graduated from WSU.  Those with information about businesses that deliver goods and services to people in Thurston County should get it to Zandra for the list she is making. Motion:  Terry moved and Viola seconded a motion to adjourn.  Meeting adjourned at 1:32 PM.
